Big Day, Happy News

I couldn’t let the day pass without a quick post to the blog just to say … Guess What? Today I finished the final edits on my current work-in-progress. Oh yes! Care to join me in the happy dance of joy? Of course you do!

70, 674 words. 29 chapters. I’m still calling it Ghosts Don’t Wear Silk Stockings for now but this title is subject to change. Although a part of me is a little sad that I won’t be self-publishing this book in early September as I’d originally intended, I do hope to find a happy home for the book where everyone can read it soon.

Next step? Rest! Recharge! Eat some ice cream!

I’ll start writing a rough draft of the synopsis tomorrow. I’m a little terrified of the next unknown steps but I feel compelled to give my book a chance.

More news to come!

Do I Have Food Stuck in my Teeth?

Have you ever gone to a party and happily socialized the night away, only to discover later in the restroom that unbeknownst to you, you had a huge chunk of parsley stuck between your front teeth, impossible to ignore, but no one felt compelled to mention it? Kind of makes you feel silly, doesn’t it? Or maybe you’re one of those really confident people that can take control of the room and not feel the least bit self-conscience about your appearance? Maybe you just pick the food out of your teeth and move on? I wish I had that kind of confidence.

I guess today I’m sort of equating self-publishing to food stuck in my teeth. Remember a week or two back and I was sort of hanging in the balance of ‘to-publish’ or ‘not-to-publish’. I had been all set to self-publish my second book this fall and then I panicked and got cold feet, or at least I thought it was cold feet. I tried to brush it off and plunge ahead, determined to finish my final edits and get this thing ready for the world to read.

Problem is, no matter how hard I try to embrace this idea, I am still left with this nagging voice inside me that is saying, “Wait a second, Steph. Are you really sure you want to do that?” I thought I was sure. And then it hit me, it’s not about fulfilling some vain fantasy of being a traditionally published author versus giving Indie my all. It’s about worrying that my writing isn’t quite “good enough” and not having the right tools in place (i.e. a team of experienced publishers and editors to fix my wrongs) to know better. What if my writing sucks but everyone is just too afraid to tell me? I love my story and I am sure I could find one or two others that may love it too (besides you, Mom) but is it worth the bitter sting of poor reviews and lack of sales? I’m a sensitive soul. I’m not sure I can handle it.

I published The Between World almost exactly one year ago to the day. (Happy Publishing Anniversary to me!) I don’t regret it but I do wonder if maybe I pushed the button a bit too soon. That story could have been better. To a certain extent, I’ll probably always feel that way about anything I write when I’m looking in hindsight. Experience and practice helps us to refine our craft and (hopefully), the future me will be a better writer than the earlier starts. I wish I could judge by reviews but the reality is that only one review on Amazon came from a source that I don’t know. Whoever she is, she made my day with four stars and I wish I could thank her! But there have been two others on Goodreads that came from unknown sources that were clearly not impressed with my work. The ‘unknowns’ who rate my book carry more weight (to me) than the others because they don’t really have any reason to care if they point out I have something stuck in my teeth – See what I’m getting at here?

I guess what it all boils down to is that I take writing very seriously and I want to regard myself as a professional. I have great respect for those who self-publish and I’ve had the privilege to read quite a few that I would definitely recommend to reader friends. Because I take my craft seriously, I don’t want to be the self-published writer that gives all others a bad name by publishing poor quality work. I wish I could afford to hire a professional editor and other book services but I don’t have that option, at least not at this point in time. I’ll never give up writing and I’ll never stop reading books and striving to make my own work better so it’s not like I’m giving up or calling it quits. I just won’t be self-publishing book number two. This time it is definite. If my only reason to push forward is because I want it NOW rather than wait until it’s really ready, well, that’s just not a good enough reason.

Thank you to everyone that entered the Goodreads Giveaway and added the book to your ‘to-read’ shelf. I really do appreciate it. One wonderful thing about authors is that they are the most kind and supportive bunch you can find on the internet! I’ve canceled the giveaway and I’m in the process of trying to have the book removed from the Goodreads library.

In the meantime, I’m wrapping up final edits this week and will jump right into writing a query and synopsis and get that baby out into the hands of professionals who can help make it sparkle and shine. I’ll keep you posted on this and other projects.

LOOK (another challenge)!

Hey, LOOK! It’s another fun challenge…

Thank you, L.J. Kentowski for tagging me in this challenge. Don’t know L.J.? She’s the author of Guardian of Fate, an urban fantasy novel that I read and personally loved. Definitely check it out and do it soon because she’s getting ready to release the next book in the series, which proves to be just as hard to put down as the first!

Now, the rules of the challenge are as follows:

* Find the first usage of the word “look” in your WIP and post the surrounding paragraph into your blog.

* Tag as many people as you want to take part in the challenge with you

Easy as pie, right? So, let’s get to it. Here is the first instance of “look” that I could find in my WIP Ghosts Don’t Wear Silk Stockings.

***

He lit a cigarette and gave her a sultry stare. He was still sitting in her bed, a sheet pulled just high enough to cover a perfect set of toned legs. His chiseled chest sprouted dark hair mingled with the occasional grey sprout that gave him an air of distinction. His dark Mediterranean skin echoed memories of pictures she’d seen in a magazine of gods. He was handsome; there was little doubt of that. He was more than handsome, he was drop dead gorgeous. Looking at him was enough to get her going again and if she wasn’t careful, she’d be back in bed and lost in erotic oblivion for the rest of the morning.

Yep, it’s our first glimpse of Dan in Chapter One. Sure didn’t take me long to take a good, long ‘look’ at him, did it? Can you blame me? 😉

Your turn!

Six Sentence Sunday – Is My Sister an Alien or What?

Oh my, is that the time?

Anyone mind telling me how summer managed to slip through my fingers? This is it. The last weekend before we jump back into the school routine. This is a exciting year for us because my second oldest is starting kindergarten. He can’t wait. Me, well, it’s tough letting go and having all that time to myself during the day. Oh, wait … what’s that? Time to myself? Hmmm…

Anyway, it’s Six Sentence Sunday and you know what that means, right? Yep, it’s time to cut a smidgen from my soon-to-be-released novel Ghosts Don’t Wear Silk Stockings and stick up here on the blog for your reading enjoyment. Six sentences not enough for you? If you haven’t already read Chapter One in its entirety then be sure to click HERE and check it out. Best of all, if you want the chance to win an autographed copy of the paperback then hop over HERE to Goodreads and enter the giveaway where I have five copies up for grabs. There will be opportunities to win digital copies soon too so make sure you follow the blog or connect with me on Facebook and/or Twitter so you don’t miss the announcements.

Last, but certainly not least, don’t forget to check out the other wonderful authors participating in Six Sentence Sunday. You can find a list of blogs HERE.

Right … on to the meaty stuff… I struggled to find the six that I would share this week but finally settled on this. Greer’s gone missing and Brianna knows she needs to put space between herself and Dan. She takes a gamble and shows up unexpected at her older sister’s house. Last time she saw Kate, they hadn’t parted on friendly terms so she isn’t expecting a warm reception.

“I don’t want to impose, really,” Brianna said putting a little more distance between herself and Kate. There was something about Kate that she just couldn’t quite put her finger on but it was very different. She was entirely too happy. Perhaps aliens had landed during the night and kidnapped the sister she knew and replaced her with this all too perky alien replica? She tried to get a glimpse of nearby crop circles as Kate hauled her through the front door, calling out for Ken to set an extra place at the table.

“He’ll be thrilled to see you,” Kate said turning back to Brianna.

Thanks for reading! 🙂

The Sunshine Award – For Moi?

A million thanks and a million beautiful flowers to Mae Clair for honoring me with the lovely Sunshine Award. How better to celebrate the end of the summer than by basking in lazy, late summer sunshine and accepting this award?

How does the Sunshine Award work, you’re wondering? Allow me to shed some light …

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you. – THANK YOU, MAE! (Check out the link to Mae’s blog!)
  2. Post the award icon – Sailing high above in the blog post, just where it should be.
  3. Answer the questions below. – Oh, goody gum drops.
  4. Nominate ten other bloggers. – Chewing fingernails. Who shall I nominate? Who? Who? Who?

Without further ado, let’s jump into the questions…

  1. What is your favorite Christmas/festive movie?
Is it that time of year already? I love Christmas movies but either I’ve got a mental block on winter festivities at the moment, or I can’t just pick one that stands above the rest. If I am forced to choose a favorite holiday indulgence, I must pick Charlie Brown, Rudolph, and Frosty – the cartoon classics that I grew up with and still enjoy every year.
  2. What is your favorite flower?
I love all flowers. Something quirky about me? I’ve never understood the appeal of cutting them just to display on a table. They die in a few days and it just seems terribly sad. My favorite flowers are the ones that bring the world around me to life.
  3. What is your favorite non-alcoholic beverage?
Coke, although I would never drink it daily. It’s that special, once-in-a-while drink I look forward to. Mostly, I drink water from the moment I wake up (no coffee for me!) until the moment I go to bed.
  4. What is your passion?
Well, writing. Duh! 😉 Books are my passion. Language is my passion. My family is my passion. I’ve got a lot of reasons to be happy.
  5. What is your favorite time of year?
Definitely Fall! Summer is a happy time but I’m not a fan of the heat and humidity that comes with it. Fall brings that much needed reprieve and breath of fresh air. I love the colors in the trees, the smell in the air, the crunch of the leaves on a walk through the woods. I love pumpkins and hay rides, drinking apple cider, the joy of oranges, yellows, and reds! Best of all, I love wrapping up in a cozy sweater, snuggling close to the people I love. Now, if only winter didn’t have to follow. Hmmm…
  6. What is your favorite time of day?
I’ve always been more of a morning person. I get more done in the early hours than I do the rest of the day. But my favorite? That point in the day when we start winding down and I can just cuddle up and veg. 🙂
  7. What is your favorite physical activity?
Dancing is a favorite for me too, Mae! I also love walking and yoga.
  8. What is your favorite vacation?
As in the best I’ve ever had or my ideal dream getaway for the future? Hmmm… My best vacation was a solo journey to London, England that I made ten years ago. I’d been to London once before and knew there was so much more I wanted to explore but what I hadn’t been planning was to fall in love! Yep, I met a native and we hit it off pretty well. We kept in touch after I returned to the US and eventually he visited me here. A couple more trips back and forth and we got engaged. I ought to write it in a novel, huh? 😉 I’d go back to London in a heartbeat. There is just something about the city that calls to me. But pretty much, my ideal getaway spot is anywhere new and exciting to explore. I want to see what I can get into next…

Time to pick out ten bloggers for my nominations of The Sunshine Award. This is the tough part. I know a couple of you have already been nominated but consider yourselves extra special for being nominated twice!
