What’s Up?

The sky, of course.

And besides that, it might be a good time to give you an idea of what to expect from me in the days ahead. I’m participating in two challenges, one new and one old, and I’m pretty excited about both of these.

First of all, in October I’m trying a blog challenge courtesy of Jane Ann McLachlan. I’ve never participated in a challenge to write blog posts before but I’ll do pretty much anything for a little inspiration when it comes to writing. Jane’s challenge interested me right away because I’d already been in a nostalgic mood and thinking about putting that to use in my blog. Her challenge will help to focus that nostalgia for me.

Jane’s challenge presents us with this theme:

“Write a memory or reflection for each of the first 25 years of life. It can be a personal memoir from your life, a reflection on turning a certain age, a recollection of someone else at that age, a poem or a photo, on the ages 1 to 25.”

The challenge?

To write at least 25 of these posts in the month of October. (Eeeks!) Admittedly, this is going to be a tough one for me.

From what I gather, flexibility and creativity in this theme are welcome so it won’t have to be just be a boring rendition of, “this one time at band camp…”

I’ve not found an official linky list or sign-up sheet for this challenge but if you click on the link I attached above, you’ll find all the details that you need to participate if you so desire.

Once we make our way through October, it’s November! November! November! Don’t know why I’m excited about November? Have you been living under a rock? November is National Novel Writing Month, aka Nanowrimo. You can find the details and sign-up on the official site HERE.

(Add me as a buddy while you’re at it. My user name is StephIngram.)

The challenge?

50,000 words in the month of November!

I know a lot of fellow writers who plot and plan, fill out outlines and character sheets, and have a pretty good idea of what they want to write before they sit down on November 1st and let the words start flowing but me? Nah. I embrace the challenge wholeheartedly. I look at Nanowrimo as my time to PLAY! When I sit down on November 1st, at first I might have a scene in my head or the seed of an idea starting to take root but I won’t know who my characters are and I won’t know what sort of mischief they plan to get up to over the course of the next thirty days. I realize some writers consider this reason for heart palpitations and cold sweats but to me, it’s pure bliss.

I just want to write and create and not care about whether the end result is actually reader-worthy. (As a matter of fact, history proves that it won’t be.) But that’s kind of the point, right? The rest of the year my inner editor gets to tell me that what I’m writing isn’t good enough or try to push me into a direction that I feel like I should take, rather than want to take. During November, it’s goodbye editor and hello fun.

And let’s face it, the Nanowrimo forums and community offer new friendships, encouragement, and inspiration for the entire month. Writing 50,000 words in a single month in and of itself isn’t really anything special or exciting but doing it alongside a multitude of other like-minded people is what gives it that special sparkle. (Don’t believe me? Try it! I dare you…)

To make it even sweeter, this isn’t just any old year for me doing Nanowrimo. This is an anniversary of sorts. This is my 5th year!! I first discovered and participated in Nanowrimo in 2008. I didn’t know what to expect that year and I didn’t expect to write 50,000 words but I surprised myself and I did it. By the end of it, I was hooked and I went on to win in 2009, 2010, and 2011. This year will be no exception.

So, what does this mean to you? Well, in essence, it means that once you’ve suffered through a month of reminiscing with me about my first twenty-five years of life, I’m going to drag you straight into the madness that is Nanowrimo. Consider yourself warned.

So… Are you with me or against me? What challenges will you embrace over the coming months?

Six Sentence Sunday – Despite the Voices in my Head

You know those pesky voices in your head? (Or is that just me?) Every week we seem to share the same conversation.

First, they tell me, “Let’s not do Six Sentence Sunday this week. We need time to delve into this new story before we share snippets with the world.”

I always laugh and say okay but then by about Thursday or Friday, I say, “Well, I didn’t manage to post much on my blog this week so it’s an easy way to get something fresh out there. I’m going to do Six Sentence Sunday again.”

The voices in my head sigh and roll their eyes. “Yeah, yeah, you always say it’s easy but just you wait until you open up your word document and actually try to pick out six sentences that are worth sharing.”

“It will be fine,” I assure the voices.

Then I open up Word. What I expect will take me about five minutes to choose, copy, paste, and schedule for Sunday, actually takes me half the day. Okay, maybe not that long … but the voices had a point. Choosing just six sentences is really, really tough. I admire all those that manage to do it every week and still kind of make sense too.

I’ve agonized over it long enough. This is my six, take it or leave it. It comes from my current work-in-progress that is still untitled. Sarah and Nathanial share a special, but unusual bond. She’s drawn to him in ways that she can’t begin to explain but yet, she knows he is dangerous. What is it that she finds so alluring about being with him?

“I have on many occasions sampled the blood that pours through your veins,” he admitted at last. She shuddered again but he ignored this as he gently kissed her lips.

“I still have questions,” she whispered as his breath caressed her cheeks.

“There is time.”

“My grandmother, she needs me.” She tried to push him away but he caught her shoulders and kept her firmly rooted in the chair.

That’s it for me and my supersonic six for this sunny Sunday. If you want more, you’re just going to have to return next Sunday. Hopefully the voices in my head won’t have succeeded in talking me out of it by then.

Six Sentence Sunday – In Honor of August’s Blue Moon

Happy September! So this is it, then. Summer is over and the kids are back to school. The days are getting shorter. (Have you noticed?) It won’t be much longer before we’re packing away the shorts and t-shirts in favor of jeans and long shirts and grabbing a jacket before we head out the door. Sure, I feel a little sad about this. And believe me, even though I swore I’d be a big girl at the bus stop when my little guy started kindergarten, I still got teary walking back to the house. After this wonderful holiday weekend, I’ll be sending #3 to preschool. Man, time sure flies! But it’s not all sad, of course, because if you’ve been around my blog before, you might already know that I love the fall. I love the color in the trees and can’t wait to visit the farm to pick pumpkins. And of course, I’m relieved to enjoy some cooler temps because those hazy, hot, and humid days start to get to me after a while.

But anyway, I digress. We’re not here to talk about the weather, no matter how exciting that may be. (?) We’re not even here to mark the passage of time, even though it keeps marching steadily onward. It’s Sunday. We’re here to share six sentences! Oh yeah…

New to Six Sentence Sunday? Then you need to click HERE immediately and aquaint yourself with the other fabulous participants. There are so many greats to pick from and it’s always fun to find out what they come up with next. The official Six Sentence Sunday website makes it easy to hop from one to the next. What better way to spend a Sunday than discovering a new author offering a sneak peek of your next favorite book?

(Pick me! Pick me!)

As for my six, well, we all know I’ve posted plenty from Ghosts Don’t Wear Silk Stockings! Wooo weee… We’re getting bored with that one, aren’t we? Wait! Wait! Don’t say yes! You haven’t even read the book yet. You really have to stick with me long enough to read that book. (Planning to pimp it out during September’s ‘Gearing Up to Get An Agent’ event so keep your fingers crossed for me, K?)

But yeah, I finished the final edits on that one and after all that work, I think I need a rest. Don’t you? Dan may be drop-dead gorgeous but he’s starting to make my head hurt thinking about him too long. It’s time to move on to something new. A few weeks back, I shared six from the next novel (still untitled) that I’m writing. I introduced a very tense relationship between my two main characters Nathanial and Sarah. Remember it? No? Well, if you’re interested, you can click HERE and refresh your memory. As I embark on my newest writing adventure, I wanted to share another six from Nathanial and Sarah’s story so here goes…

***

It was a feeling that was difficult to ignore, almost as difficult as not being able to remember anything before moving in with Grandmamma.

The moon’s full glow cast an icy shimmer on the world outside her window making her feel like an alien in her own home. She shivered and pulled her knees into her chest resting her head. Her eyelids were drooping. She contemplated the last time she had a full night’s sleep and couldn’t remember. A moan in the upstairs bedroom reminded her of the only reason she stayed.

Like it? It’s got potential, I think. Guess I better quit my rambling and get back to writing. After all, you’ll want me back next week with a brand new six, right? Right?

Thought so.

Big Day, Happy News

I couldn’t let the day pass without a quick post to the blog just to say … Guess What? Today I finished the final edits on my current work-in-progress. Oh yes! Care to join me in the happy dance of joy? Of course you do!

70, 674 words. 29 chapters. I’m still calling it Ghosts Don’t Wear Silk Stockings for now but this title is subject to change. Although a part of me is a little sad that I won’t be self-publishing this book in early September as I’d originally intended, I do hope to find a happy home for the book where everyone can read it soon.

Next step? Rest! Recharge! Eat some ice cream!

I’ll start writing a rough draft of the synopsis tomorrow. I’m a little terrified of the next unknown steps but I feel compelled to give my book a chance.

More news to come!

LOOK (another challenge)!

Hey, LOOK! It’s another fun challenge…

Thank you, L.J. Kentowski for tagging me in this challenge. Don’t know L.J.? She’s the author of Guardian of Fate, an urban fantasy novel that I read and personally loved. Definitely check it out and do it soon because she’s getting ready to release the next book in the series, which proves to be just as hard to put down as the first!

Now, the rules of the challenge are as follows:

* Find the first usage of the word “look” in your WIP and post the surrounding paragraph into your blog.

* Tag as many people as you want to take part in the challenge with you

Easy as pie, right? So, let’s get to it. Here is the first instance of “look” that I could find in my WIP Ghosts Don’t Wear Silk Stockings.

***

He lit a cigarette and gave her a sultry stare. He was still sitting in her bed, a sheet pulled just high enough to cover a perfect set of toned legs. His chiseled chest sprouted dark hair mingled with the occasional grey sprout that gave him an air of distinction. His dark Mediterranean skin echoed memories of pictures she’d seen in a magazine of gods. He was handsome; there was little doubt of that. He was more than handsome, he was drop dead gorgeous. Looking at him was enough to get her going again and if she wasn’t careful, she’d be back in bed and lost in erotic oblivion for the rest of the morning.

***

Yep, it’s our first glimpse of Dan in Chapter One. Sure didn’t take me long to take a good, long ‘look’ at him, did it? Can you blame me? 😉

Your turn!
